Leave The Roaches Behind! How To Move From Your Rented Home Without Packing Cockroaches

In some rented places, cockroach problems are super hard to avoid, especially if you live in an apartment complex or urban location with houses in close proximity to one another. Sadly, not every property owner is as vigilant as they should be about pest control. If you have decided enough is enough and you are ready to leave all those unwelcome house guests behind, you might think it's a good idea to just pack up and find a new place. Unfortunately, if you don't watch what you're doing during the move, you will end up carrying those scurrying pests right with you to your new home. If you are trying to move without taking cockroaches with you, make sure you keep these helpful tips in mind. 

Work with a pest control service before the move. 

This may sound odd, but it is better to get in touch with a pest control service like Suffolk Pest Control before you move even if you think the bug problem at the old rental place is not your problem. While you may not want to pay for the old property to be treated, the pest control company can offer sound professional advice and help so you don't pack cockroaches in your belongings. If needed, they will even treat furniture and appliances before you take them to the new place, which can drastically reduce your chances of carrying hidden cockroaches in with you. 

Disassemble everything and clean it thoroughly before packing. 

Roaches are often assumed to be large enough that they can be seen so they would be easy to avoid packing into a box. However, baby roaches can be incredibly small. Plus, the eggs of cockroaches are easy to miss and are often tucked inside of things. Before you pack up certain items, it is best to take them apart, clean them, and make sure there are no bugs hiding out inside. A few examples include: 

• small kitchen appliances, such as toasters, blenders, and mixers
• picture frames and other wall decor
• dressers and wooden furniture pieces

Launder clothing and take it to the new place immediately. 

Cockroaches will gladly hang out in clothing, as it gives them warmth, protection, and a good place to hide. Because of this, it is crucial that you launder all clothing and take it straight from the clothes dryer to the new place in a sealed plastic bag. Do this with clothing in laundry baskets, dresser drawers, and even in the closets.
